Four things you can check yourself in five minutes
You don’t need me to tell you whether something’s wrong. You need to know how bad it is, and that’s usually worse than it looks — wood rots from the wet side first, and the wet side is the one facing away from you.
Find any of those and call me. Find none of them and you just saved yourself a service call — which is a fine outcome too.
Why it happens here
Water plus freezing, most of the year
In Vail, measurable snow falls in ten of the twelve months — about 189 inches a year, spread across roughly 67 separate snow days. Only July and August come through clean.
And the freezing runs later than most people expect. The National Weather Service puts the average last spring freeze at May 18 in Glenwood Springs, June 16 in Aspen and July 5 in Steamboat Springs, and in the high valleys the first fall freeze can be back by the first week of September.
Every one of those days is the same cycle: water soaks into the wood during the day, freezes at night, and expands. Hundreds of times a season, for years. That’s what takes a deck apart, opens the joint around a window, and pushes a fence post out of line — and it’s why the work has to be done for this climate, not for a catalog.

What people ask before they call
Do you charge for estimates?
No. I come out, look at it in person, and tell you what it needs. If it turns out it doesn’t need anything yet, I’ll tell you that too and there’s no charge for the visit.
Do you do the work yourself or subcontract it?
I do the work. That’s the whole point of calling a carpenter instead of a company. For most of my career I was the guy at the bottom of a chain of subcontractors — the homeowner paid one number and I got a fraction of it, three people removed. I don’t run my own jobs that way.
What areas do you serve?
Eagle, Garfield, Pitkin, Summit and Routt County — Edwards, Avon, Vail, Eagle, Gypsum, Glenwood Springs, Rifle, Silt, New Castle, Carbondale, Basalt, Snowmass, Aspen, Breckenridge, Frisco, Silverthorne and Steamboat Springs. If you’re not sure, call and ask.
What don’t you do?
Cabinets and doors. I do the trim and casing around a door, but I don’t hang the door itself, and I don’t install cabinets. I’d rather tell you that on the phone than take the job and figure it out later.
Do you work through the winter?
Yes, on the work that makes sense in winter — windows, interior and exterior trim, and repairs that can’t wait. A leaking window is the one thing that doesn’t get easier by waiting for spring; it’s leaking right now, in the weather that’s causing it. New deck builds are a spring and summer job up here.
Do I need a permit?
It depends on the county or town and on what the work is. Requirements are not the same in unincorporated Eagle County, in Garfield County, or inside town limits in Vail or Aspen. I’ll tell you what applies to your property before we start.
Do you buy the materials or do I?
Depends on the job. For windows, you buy the unit and I do the window installation — that way you see the two numbers separately and I have no reason to steer you toward a brand. For most other work I’ll price the materials with the job. Either way, you’ll know which is which before anything starts.
How soon can you come look?
Call or text and I’ll tell you honestly when I can get there. I’d rather give you a real date than a fast one I can’t keep — not knowing when someone will show up is the most common complaint people have about this trade.
